If you feel that you have an aptitude for business and its application in the world of sales then this is the course for you.
Learn the basic skills of business and administration with a view to developing expertise in the dynamic world of retail. Learn frontline skills coupled with an understanding of how the retail industry works.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
- Leaving Certificate, LCA or QQI Level 4.
- Mature students are exempt from Leaving Certificate requirement.
- All applicants are interviewed.
- CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English.

COURSE CONTENT:
The following subjects may be offered:
Business Administration Skills - 5N1610
Gives students an understanding of how businesses are structured, the role of managers, the importance of effective recruitment of employees, etc. Learn about the finances of a business, methods of communication, role of insurance, role of Health & Safety and Quality Control.
Marketing Practice - 5N1400
Conduct a SWOT analysis. Develop a marketing plan for a specific product or service. Examine the life cycle of a range of products including new product development. Explain the elements of the marketing mix. Carry out market research applying appropriate techniques and research methodologies.
Work Experience - 5N1356
A block placement of two weeks in an office environment. One-to-one consultation in relation to your CV design and finding a suitable placement – focussing on your skills and talents, etc. Link with local employers and job opportunities.
Digital Marketing - 5N1364
Develop and execute digital marketing strategies and activities under supervision using a range of e-tools and contexts. Identify & evaluate examples of digital marketing strategies across several industries.
Web Authoring - 5N1610
Build professional websites using HTML, CSS, WordPress and video editing techniques.
Retail Selling - 5N1619
Learn how to evaluate a Retail Organisation including Legal, Customer Care, Complaint Handling & Returns Policies – Investigate Cash Handling Techniques. This module also includes how to do Product Promotions, Upselling and Complaint Handling issues.
Retail Display - 5N1861
Learn how to plan and construct a retail display using a variety of techniques with the purpose of generating extra sales in their future employment.
Spreadsheet Methods - 5N1977
Produce a spreadsheet that meets a simple design specification and is fit for purpose. Learn a range of spreadsheet features such as data and cell formatting techniques, conditional IF statements, financial, date and time functions. Generate a variety of types of graphs from spreadsheet data. Automate routine multi-step tasks through the creation, execution and management of simple macros.
Additional Training / Workshops
- Introduction to GDPR: This workshop gives learners an overview of GDPR. The workshop examines what GDPR stands for and gives an understanding of the current data protection rules and obligations. The learners also receive information on the types of data, the terminology associated with GDPR, the penalties with breaches, storage of data and general do’s and don’ts regarding data. A West Cork Campus Certificate is issued on completion.
- Microsoft Outlook: This Microsoft Outlook workshop will give information on accessing your college email, Outlook layout, how to send and receive emails, attaching/downloading a file and reply options. It also covers organising your emails – folders etc, Outlook settings, signature, out-of-office reply, using the calendar, setting up meetings, setting up reminders and to do lists. A West Cork Campus Certificate is issued on completion.
- Mastering the Professional Phone Conversation: This workshop gives the learner the knowledge and skills when answering the telephone professionally in the workplace. Additionally, handling telephone complaints and ending calls is also covered. A West Cork Campus Centre Certificate is issued on completion.
I found the Level 5 Business course to be a wonderful experience and I acquired numerous skills that I am now using daily in my full-time role in Quality Assurance & IT at Spice of Life Dunmanway. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone thinking of returning to work. The modules cover everything you need to know in order to work in a busy office. I have made new friends and treasure my memories of a great year with highly dedicated tutors.

This course is specifically designed for people who wish to gain employment in a fully computerised office as an administrator, secretary, accounts or payroll assistant. The West Cork Campus opened up a lot of new doors for me. I made some new and great friends and I also gained many new skills. I was very lucky to gain full-time employment after completing the course and have no regrets.
